Every month De Fabriek screens an international film with English subtitles. It Was Just an Accident is the new film by Iranian master Jafar Panahi (Taxi Tehran). Earlier this year, the film won the prestigious Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival and, like Panahi’s previous films, was made without permission from the Iranian regime. It Was Just an Accident is a thriller in which revenge, humor, and humanity come together.
Vahid (Vahid Mobasseri) is working in the garage when a customer comes in with car trouble. Vahid is startled when he thinks he recognizes Eghbal, the officer who tortured him in prison. He senses an opportunity for revenge, but at the same time his doubts grow. Together with several fellow sufferers, he desperately tries to uncover the truth. Their quest leads them into situations ranging from risky to downright absurd. How can they be sure they have the right man?
Director Jafar Panahi himself was sentenced to six years in prison and received a professional ban. He drew on his own experiences for It Was Just an Accident, which he filmed after his release without permission from the Iranian regime.
